Year 10 Science
Subject Description
In Year 10 Science, students are introduced to scientific and experimental techniques as they learn about all aspects of Science. Students will be involved in a range of activities from studying local wildlife to exploring the building blocks of the universe. As well as preparing students for future study of Science, students will also gain a greater understanding of the world they live in. There is always something to inspire and challenge the budding scientist. In Term 4, the students start Level 1 Science and complete their first Level 1 Science Internal Assessment.
Subject Overview
Term 1
Basic Science skills and Branches of Sciences.
Living World : Ecology and adaption with varieties of examples.
Genetics: DNA structure, Cell division and Mendel laws
Formative test: 4 credits.
Project: Pest in NZ
Term 2
Material Wold: Chemical and Physical properties of different groups of substances eg: Acid and Base, Energy, Fuel and Metals
Formative test: 4 credits
Research : Carbon cycle, coal, choose any element or lab, chemicals.
Term 3
Physical world: Physical Inquiry and Physical concepts: Physical phenomenon found in simple everyday situations involving Mass, weight ,movement, Force , Air resistance and Energy:
Formative test: 4 credits
EOTC: Motat trip
Research: properties of Heat and Insulation in NZ
Term 4
NCEA Level:1 : Biology 1.1 A: internal 4 Credits:
Carry out a practical investigation in a biological context with direction. Exercise and Fitness: walking, jogging and springing.
